#KibbleInspires Lynsey - Kibble: Specialist services & support for young people facing adversity

Lynsey’s department of Marketing, Communications and Funding is integral to promoting the wide range of innovative services available at Kibble. Discover the role marketing plays at Kibble in her interview.

What did you do before Kibble?

I did a degree in Film and Media and Marketing at Stirling University, travelled the world and then started in KibbleWorks at the end of 2004 just after it opened. I provided marketing support for KibbleWorks, the trading arm of Kibble. This was my first position in a “graduate” role and I was in a fortunate position that Kibble had the ethos to hire for attitude and train for skill. After a couple of years, I was promoted to Marketing Officer across all Kibble services and stayed with the organisation for 4 years before moving on to be an Events and Marketing Manager for another social enterprise for 5 years. In 2014 Kibble asked me to come back to project manage the development of The Experience and I ran this until March 2018 when I moved into the position of Communications & Marketing Manager.

How long have you worked at Kibble?

In total it has been almost 10 years but over a 15-year period.

What made you want to work for Kibble?

I was intrigued by the organisation but didn’t know much about it at the time. To be honest I just wanted to get a job that I could start to use my degree. Then I learned about it being a social enterprise and charity, and all the innovative work it did to support young people and I was excited to be working for such a forward thinking organisation.

When I came back to run The Experience at the start of 2014 it was the offer of the chance to work on such a big and inspiring project that would make a difference to the lives of young people. It also provided the steepest learning curve I have ever been on and was an exciting, once in a lifetime career opportunity!

Can you give us an overview of your role at Kibble and what area you work in? Please explain about the service?

I am the Communications & Marketing Manager and am responsible for the communications, marketing, design and funding team. We are an integrated part of the support services so don’t work directly with the children and young people, but our role is integral in promoting what Kibble does. Our team provide all internal and external communications including website management, digital marketing, PR, design, brand management, events and funding.

What is the best thing about working in Kibble? Tell us one thing you love about your job?

For me it is the diversity of my role and getting to work with so many different people across all areas of Kibble. We have a large staff team operating varied services and it is great to connect with them and support them in their marketing and funding requirements. One day we can be promoting the latest offer at The Experience, the next we can be telling a success story about a young person that has transitioned out of care.

Can you share a defining moment or story about your time at Kibble?

For me it was the culmination of months of hard work in developing, opening and managing The Experience and being awarded a 5* Visit Scotland Activity Centre status within 7 months of opening. Being awarded the 5* status is almost unheard of in your first grading and within such a short period of operation. It was so special because it involved a lot of hard work and effort from various teams and departments across Kibble. It felt well deserved for everyone involved. You might not think this directly relates to the young people, but we built this centre to give young people the opportunity of employment as part of our Young Workforce Development service.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of joining Kibble?

It really is a great organisation to work for and don’t think that the only career opportunities are the obvious ones! The roles across Kibble are diverse and varied, whether you support the young people directly or work in a service that supports them as part of the wider organisation. Working here may open doors to career opportunities that you didn’t expect and there is scope to move into different positions and services. I would also say the development and learning opportunities are excellent.
