#KibbleInspires Joe - Kibble: Specialist services & support for young people facing adversity
Posted: December 16, 2019

From radio presenting to teaching young people music, Joe made the career change to become a Child and Youth Care Worker at Kibble. Discover a day in his work life.

What did you do before Kibble?

Before I joined Kibble I was a builder for 22 years. I have also had a career as a music tutor and radio presenter.

How long have you worked at Kibble?

I have worked at Kibble for almost 2 years.

What made you want to work for Kibble?

I always enjoyed teaching music to young people and decided I wanted to do it as a living. A friend suggested I would be a great fit at Kibble.

Can you give us an overview of your role at Kibble and what area you work in? Please explain about the service?

I work in Kibble’s Safe Centre. I am an annualised member of the care staff and work as part of a team in the running of the house and caring for the young people. We work with young people who have complex emotional needs and try to create an environment where they feel equal, valued, cared for and safe. I try to use music to connect with the young people and be an adult who can they can trust.

What is the best thing about working in Kibble. Tell us one thing you love about your job?

When I see young people happy! That is the best part of the job for me. When I see a young person attempt to do something out of their comfort zone and they achieve it. My job gives me the opportunity to motivate young people and encourage them to achieve things they never thought they could.

Can you share a defining moment or story about your time at Kibble?

My most defining story at Kibble involved a young person having a bad day, he was in a low frame of mind and his behaviour and actions made it a testing situation. Once he regained composure, I spent time talking to the young person and he was very remorseful. Fast forward four hours and, along with his peers, he was swimming in the sea on the Ayrshire coast having the time of his life. The story describes a normal day at Kibble.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of joining Kibble?

Just do it! Kibble is a wonderful place to work. The staff are amazing – they help create a great environment to work in.
