In addition to these core programmes, a range of short programmes is provided by the team. These may be utilised in an introductory capacity prior to moving on to the core programmes, or as stand-alone interventions for the young person as appropriate. The short programmes may be facilitated by the young person's key worker (with support and debriefing by Programmes staff), or can be facilitated directly by a member of the Programmes team. Short programmes on offer include:
Motivational Sessions
The aim of this short intervention is to assess and build upon the young person's level of motivation to engage in intervention work. A series of exercises exploring values and goals is included to support the young person, who may be in the pre-contemplation stage of change, to move towards contemplation and action.
Expressing Your Emotion to the Maximum (Eye-Max)
This is a 6 session intervention, which aims to enhance the young person's emotional literacy and promote understanding of links between emotions and behaviour.
Topics explored:
- Different types of emotion (expanding the young person's emotional vocabulary)
- Recognising emotions
- Body language and emotions
- Physical responses to emotions
- Emotions in the self and others
- How emotions can influence behaviour
AMP
Anger Management Programme: Turn Down the Volume
A 4 session intervention which aims to help the young person explore their anger and its impact on their life, with a view to helping them recognise the role of anger in problematic behaviour. Healthier coping strategies to manage anger are introduced as an alternative to aggression or violence.
Topics explored:
- Anger triggers and the physical effects of anger
- Controlling thoughts
- Self-regulation skills
- Problem solving
Tailored Interventions
The team also offers a range of interventions that are tailored to meet the individual needs of the young person, for whom structured programmes may not be appropriate. These have included social skills development, anxiety management, relaxation, psychosexual education and lifestory work.
Quotes about the Programmes Service from Kibble's young people:
"Some of the stuff is genuine life skills you do need for dealing with everyday problems, work problems, relationship problems, anything like that."
"The benefits you get for the rest of your life, cos some of the stuff does stick with you."
