Residential Services

Working in partnership with local and Scottish government, Kibble’s specialist services have been designed and developed to ensure that we are ‘Getting it right for every child’. Our provision of specialist services exists to provide a warm, consistent, stable environment. The service model provides opportunities for young people to create and foster appropriate attachments engendering safety, stability and trust. Using a holistic, needs-based approach, the service provides a foundation to transfer attachments safely and help broaden the life experiences and life chances of young people.

Kibble’s specialist in-house teams have a lengthy history and extensive experience of supporting and working with young people who have complex needs; these can encompass issues such as high-risk behaviours, including aggressive/challenging or inappropriate/harmful behaviours; experience of traumatic events, and mental health concerns. This is evidenced in recent research undertaken by our Specialist Interventions Services team across our Day, Residential and Secure services, some of the findings of which demonstrated that:

  • 64% of our young people are referred due to welfare issues
  • 60% are subject to child protection procedures
  • 64% have witnessed parental substance misuse
  • 64.1% have experienced emotional abuse
  • 67% have experienced parental neglect
  • 68% have experienced parental rejection

As part of the standard care package, all young people referred to Kibble have a psychological assessment of risk and needs by Forensic Psychologists to inform future care planning.

Young people are accommodated in small groups that are conducive to their individual needs. Our small residential units incorporate a degree of flexibility and can adapt placement numbers as required, thereby providing an individualised service based on specific needs.

All of the specialist units receive support from our Specialist Interventions Services (SIS) team of psychologists and programmes workers. Individual programmes are tailored to the needs of the young people and the SIS team is also able to offer a range of levels of family support/intervention. We have very positive links with the local health board and continue to develop partnership working with NHS staff, as we increasingly work with youngsters who have a range of health issues.

We recognise the critical importance of working professionally with all placing agencies and, across the Specialist Residential Services, have developed a focused model of regular six-weekly planning discussions/reviews for all the young people in these services. We welcome the opportunity to remain part of this partnership as the young people make the transition from Kibble back into the community.
