Project OsKar gets to work

Date:
12/06/2012

Young people on an employment training initiative brushed up on their painting skills and won a contract for work at the New South Glasgow Hospitals construction site. A tender from the Project OsKar Social Enterprise beat off competition to win the six-week contract to paint one kilometre of site hoarding at the New South Glasgow Hospitals project.

Paisley-based Project OsKar was originally launched by Kibble Education and Care Centre as a household goods recycling initiative to provide employment training and work experience for young people up to the age of 24. But it has now expanded into void property clearance and painting and decorating of empty homes in the rental sector making them ready for new tenants.

Project OsKar was successful in winning the contract from Brookfield Multiplex to paint the perimeter hoarding on the giant building site in the grounds of the Southern General Hospital.  Four young people - John Peacock, Mark Ruddy, both 23 along with 22-year-olds Michael Browne and Andrew Tarbert – all worked hard with paintbrush in hand under the direction of team leader, Stephen Lynch.

Project OsKar Manager, Gaynor Hutton said: “We were up against companies in the private sector to win the painting contract and it proves that social enterprises like ours can successfully compete in the open market. A contract like this at such a large construction project gives young people the chance to experience a real working environment and enhances their prospects of getting full-time employment when they leave Project OsKar.”

Caron Dunlop, Community Engagement Manager for Brookfield Multiplex stated, "It is a major achievement to get a social enterprise on-site at the New South Glasgow Hospital. Project Oskar has been fantastic and their commitment and professionalism throughout the contract period is to be commended. Brookfield Multiplex is committed to supporting local Small to Medium sized Enterprise and Social Enterprise as part of this project. The procurement and operations teams at the site have worked hard to support the delivery of this contract and I’m delighted that it has been a great success for both parties."
