What services does this enterprise have to offer and who are the customers?

RoadWorks offers maintenance checks on vehicles, including checking to MOT standard, safety checks and weekly maintenance checks, with a full service and vehicle repair, and a full valet service.

The service is aimed at both an internal and external customer base including the airport parking based in the surrounding area, and the general public.

What activities and tasks will the young person perform?

The young person will gain basic motor vehicle knowledge including how to carry out safety checks, the safety aspects of motor vehicles, and the importance of maintaining them. They will also perform a full valet service and mechanical aspects such as oil and water levels, tyres, replacing lightbulbs and will have an understanding of the legal requirements of the vehicle and its maintenance.

What transferable skills will the young person take from this role?

The young person will understand the importance of vehicle maintenance and repair and will have the skills to move on to a busy workshop with the understanding of how a garage operates on a day-to-day basis. They will further develop people skills and their telephone manner, and will learn the importance of working as part of a team and customer reliance on a job being carried out thoroughly and efficiently.

What is your background?

I have worked in the motor industry for 20 years, serving my apprenticeship with Drymen Motor Co, working with Volvo, and then moving on to Arnold Clark working in a SEAT franchise, and then Ford. I have been an MOT tester for eight years.
