Mossedge South is a ten-bedded unit with nine young people currently residing there. There are seven full time day care staff and two night care officers; all of whom have various qualifications, skills and experience with residential child care. The “core team” is supplemented by sessional workers (part-time care staff), cooks and domestic workers. All play a vital part in providing a professional service to our young people.

Mossedge South works in partnership with the Intensive Fostering Services. We offer a respite facility which provides support to young people within the fostering service should their placement become fragile or break down completely.

Each of the ten bedrooms in South Unit has a wash-hand basin as well as fitted wardrobes. Each room is equipped with a television and a stereo unit and the young people are also allocated money to personalise their own bedroom. All doors are fitted with Yale locks to provide residents with their own secure place for privacy. Each room has a safe fitted to provide the young people with a secure place to store valuable belongings.

Within South Unit, we have a friendly, committed team who try to provide its young people with a safe, relaxed and enjoyable environment for them to live in. We would hope that all the residents will play their own part in the decision making process within the unit. We have regular (weekly) young people's meetings where views are expressed and joint decisions made. There are regular school council meetings to raise broader issues with senior management at Kibble. A South resident will normally attend these meetings.

Food

There is a wide choice of food available at lunch times, catering for most tastes. Special dietary or religious requirements are available on request.

Cook Nights

Staff encourage young people to organise a weekly cook night with a theme of their own choice. This could be Chinese or Italian, any ideas welcome?

Rights

Kibble/South adopts and endorses Who Cares? - Scotland's Charter of Rights for children in care. A copy of this is on display within South Unit.

A keyworker is appointed to each young person prior to being admitted. He/she will look after the interests and issues of residents in their day-to-day placement at Kibble.

Activities/Outings

The care staff and residents meet each evening to discuss and plan that night's activity. This could be ice-skating, cinema, swimming or ten pin bowling, or young people can remain in the school/unit to play pool, snooker, five-a-side football or on the computer.

The unit also organises an annual holiday where we have organised activities and outdoor pursuit opportunities.

Family Contact

Each young person will have their own individual home leave programme depending on his circumstances. However, family and friends can visit almost any time so long as it does not clash with planned outings. Regular phone calls to parents/family are also encouraged to maintain contact when not on leave. Stamps, envelopes and writing materials are also freely available. Support and guidance are also on offer in dealing with any family difficulties.

A Feeling of Safety

Any instances of physical or verbal bullying will be consistently confronted by staff in an attempt to provide residents and staff with an environment where we all feel safe and at ease. We as staff try to ensure that the best service available is provided to our young people so that their time spent with us, is spent in a stimulating, positive and safe environment.
